Tot Shabbat

Once a month, Debbie Lempert leads an amazing Shabbat experience for children aged two and a half’ish through six’ish and their parents (or grandparents).   Tot Shabbat (formerly known as Munchkin Minyan) helps little ones become familiar with a Shabbat morning service routine.  Through songs and stories, they explore the Torah portion of the week. Tot Shabbat participants  have their own special Aron Kodesh, complete with ark curtain and soft, huggable Torahs.  Attendees are invited to bring with their own colorful and soft Torahs to put into the ark before the service, so they can hold their own Torah for the Torah parade during the service.  The half hour service starts at 11:30 am and ends at noon with a challah and juice Kiddush.

Junior Congregation

Some of the most important components of a good Jewish background need more than just  study in a classroom.  It is essential that our students have regular synagogue experience on Shabbat that excites and inspires them.  Here at Adath Israel Congregation, Junior Congregation is led by the Director of Education, Sharon Wasserberg, who provides such an experience.

Held once a month in the Sagel Chapel, on the second floor of the Jarson Education Center, it includes a “kid-length” Shabbat morning service and Torah study, as well as a “kid-friendly” Kiddush lunch.  Our Torah study takes a variety of forms:  Midrash, Parsha Play, story or chanting a portion of the parsha from a sefer Torah.  Service attendees participate in the service with great enthusiasm.  In addition to learning about their religion and gaining confidence with prayers that they will be responsible for leading during their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations, Minyan Katan participants celebrate Shabbat together.

I encourage you to send your children to Minyan Katan and make them a part of our community.  I also warmly invite all parents to come in to  participate or just to watch.  Make our minyan a family event and watch your children give you nachas!

The Minyan Katan schedule can be found in the monthly Jarson Journal. We gather at 10:30 am and end  at noon. A “Kid Friendly” lunch is served following the service.

Family Minyan

Family Minyan, led by our Rabbinic Intern Mitch Delcau, is a Saturday Shabbat minyan geared to the family.  This service will be held once a month beginning at 10:30 and ending at noon.  The format is similar to Junior Congregation in that the pace allows for opportunity to discuss and learn during the service.  There will be lots of singing and exploring of the Torah portion through drama or stories.  Following the service, families may stay for a kid-friendly Kiddush or join in the congregational Kiddush.
